well i am in trouble now...I think my westerbeke 4-107 engine is about to bite the dust...seems that it is smoking heavly and the oil pressure is going from 50# at startup to 20# after about 10 minutes...several weeks ago i split an oil line and pumped ALL the oil into the bilge and ran it for ? minutes that way. didn't seize .... shut it down as soon as i noticed the lack of pressure....fixed the problem and filled it with oil and i seemed to run fine the past two weeks but last week i noticed that i was down to 20# when i got to my slip ....My question to you all is what have been the most common replacements that most people use...I know that the standard engine was the 20 HP yanmar....should i to go to 25? 27? 30?35? the westerbeke in there now is 37...anybody know anything about the Mitsubishi sold by VETUS... I think rebuilding is not an option, then i would just have a REBUILT OLD ENGINE and i don't think that is cost effective....let me know what BRANDS AND HP you have gone with...i think for now i will just keep running it until it stops but i want to have all my options ready when i need to make the big switch thanks cp

Repower

We have the 36 HP 3 cy Yanmar...Starts with just a touch of the key...Actually has a fair amount of room to work on it after installation...Not cheap, but has been a great motor IMHO.... Good luck with it... 73 Ed S/V MYST

M30 Perkins

Chet, Mine was repowered with a 30 HP perkins M30, same as a Volvo MD2030. The engine is about half the size of the Yanmar 30 that was in there before. I was able to mount the the water lift muffler in front of the engine, have complete access from the aft quarter cabin to all the running gear and I have enough room for a 4D starting battery, water heater and a future Panda 4KW generator in there from the room I've saved. Cost was around 10K in 1997 dollars installed by a dealer as a turn key operation. The old Yanmar was raw water cooled and bit the dust as a result of Florida salt water use all of her life. I'm just down the road from you if you want to come check it out in Merritt Island. Email me at hadoult@aol.com. Good Luck, Tom S/V Lite Chop

Many choices, all expensive.

Westerbekes are good motors as are Yanmars and Perkins. I think newer Volvos could be considered. All around $8000. if you install yourself. Considering a Bukh(link below) for my own repower to replace the old 2QM20. Search the archives for some Bukh testimonials, about $2000. less than others. There is also Kubota, see: http://www.frontierequip.com/kubota/kubmarineprop.htm If I had a 3QM30 I would probably do a rebuild, not sure why you are opposed to that idea.

Vetus by Mitsubishi

I checked that website(Link below), very interesting. Problem in the H37C would be dimensions I think. To get more than 25hp requires going to the 4-cylinder. Also wonder about the weight, at 270 pounds(25hp) it is half the weight of the Bukh. Price is right, $6800. includes everything, even the gauges. Think I'll post the Vetus question over on "Ask All Sailors".

Hold on!

I think it would be a wise investment to pay a good mechanic first to find out what's going on. You could very well have a minor problem and not need a new motor. Before I started on a project like that, I'd pay for an hour or two's mechanic's time.

chet's update

well i just spent 30 minutes telling everyone the particulars and my computer burped and i lost it all. anyway here is the jist of it....the present engine is a 1979-198? PREVIOUSLY REBUILT westerbeke 4-107 37HP 4 cylinder MONSTER.... after i split a hose on the remote oil filter it emptied ALL the oil into the bilge but did not seize. fixed the problem with the oil and it ran fine until last week when it CONTINUED TO SMOKE and the oil pressure dropped for 50# to 15-20# after 10 minutes....anyway i have done some research and the Mitsubishi 25 HP with the right 3 blade campbell sailor prop seems the best bang for the buck and will fit. as a matter of fact ALL newer engines are smaller the the westerbeke. the 25 seems to be enough but the 33 is only $1300 more. anyway i am still looking at all options and the KUBOTO,PHASAR,UNIVERSAL,PERKINS,WESTERBEKE and YANMAR are still possible but i will not pay the price SIMPLY for the name brand...I am only considering using engines under 30 HP as i think more is a waste of both power and $$$$...Rebuilding the old previously ebuilt 4-107 seems like throwing good money after bad as i will still only have a rebuilt OLD ENGINE...talk to me direct if you want at keladi@mpinet.net ...i know the ramifications of buying an off brand, but how much can it cost over 10 years???? check out this site for ALMOST ALL engines http://www.marinewaypoints.com/market/diesel.shtml thanks cp

Adding to the confusion. . . .

is this month's Practical Sailor. Just received it yesterday and there's a diesel article. It's a jam session with several of the Northeast's best mechanics. PS did a survey with these guys and had them rate the five main engines. Perkins won hands down. Yanmar was last. Westerbeke was a close second, Universal was third. Volvo would have done well except that intial cost and cost of parts were both factors. There was a caveat regarding Yanmar. These mechanics were very experienced, tranlates to OLD. Very early Yanmars were terrible and mechanics hold a grudge. Could it be? There were some other notes: They knew of two Bukhs that had blown their flywheels apart, through the hull! Volvo prices are coming down. New John Deere's are gaining favor. No one had ever seen a Vetus. So where do I get a Perkins?

Yanmar 3JH3E

I just completed a repower from the 3QM30 27 HP (raw water cooled, heavy, ,noisy and lost its compression). The 3JH3E (40 HP) is actually smaller and lighter than the old one. It is actually wider, and the engine barely fit in width-wise.

Perkins Power

I fitted the 36hp Perkins, complete with new Hurth transmission 3 years ago. The engine has plenty of power. Infact I rarely ever used over 1200 rpm. I would definately recommend this engine.

ID on the Westerbeke

This is DEFINITELY old information dating back to the Cherubini shop of 1980 or so, but... On the C-44 we used a Westerbeke 40HP 4-cyl diesel. This was actually a Perkins 4-108 (I think). Remember that Westerbeke doesn't MAKE engines-- they merely take a stock block of someone else's and put ancillaries on it, like Vetus and even Volvo (as in the so-called 'Volvo' 454-cid speedboat V-8!!!) At Cherubini we found that the add-on brackets and so forth are what gave the most trouble with Westerbeke and got us to switch to Pathfinder, who used a VW/Audi 5-cyl diesel (VERY sweet motor). So going to the source of the issue I'd suggest bypassing Westerbeke and going right to Perkins who have built diesels since there was such a thing. I'd be curious to hear what suggestions people have for a lightweight 12-HP 2-cyl for the boat I am readying for potential production as Perkins and Yanmar only offer a 1-cyl and I will not have that thing rattling a nice little wooden boat apart. To JC2 and Rick,

John, I'm wondering if you have considered electric for your boat? In that horsepower range would it make sense? I was really impressed with the installation that I saw at Annapolis. Rick, where were you able to purchase a Perkins? I sent off an e-mail to the one company that I found on the Internet but never received a reply. Thank you gentlemen.

small perkins$$$$or rebuild

well i have searched the internet and can't find anything smaller than a 67HP perkins on their web page...have they stopped making the M30? anyway after looking around at new and 10-12k seems that the budget is not in THAT good a shape but i could handle a major overhaul for 2-4K which seems the way we are thinking...we're not leaving for any extended cruising for several years yet so this seems better then the 12 foot sculling oar that i suggested to my wife (no i hid the gun first)...anyway thanks for all the input and will keep you all informed of the outcome chet and harriet S/V Harriet's Chariot

No more Perkins M30...

Chet, The Perkins M30 was known as the M30 Parama. The desiel was built by Perkins and marinized by Parama who are no longer providing the marinization packages for Perkins. They are now known as Perkins Sabre and are an entirely different engine. The Volvo MD2030 is the same exact engine as the M30 Perkins just painted a different color according to the Volvo people and is still available. The engine is actually a Shubari industrial deisel that was made for Perkins to the Perkins design specifications and eventualy picked up by Volvo. Beneteau used them exclusively for years as well as many european manufactures. You may be able to find a new one in stock somewhere as they are still available and they were distrubuted through 2000 by Perkins I believe. Parts are no problem anywhere in the world acording to Perkins and you can probably get a deal if you locate one. They are a great engine! Small, smooth and very powerful. My 37C makes 6.5 kts at cruise and will make hull speed when pushed a little. Fuel consumption according to the specs is just over a quart per hour at cruise RPM of 2500. Max RPM is 3200. I'm running a three blade prop and I just get over 3000 RPM at max throttle with a boat speed of 7 kts. I'm happy! For JC 2, Isuzu makes a 3 cyl 15hp engine that probably has a marinizing package available that just might work for you. Check out www.blueridgediesel.com. Tom S/V Lite Chop Tom
