I have a 1979 hunter 30' with a ysm12 yanmar engine. It has lost compression (it now has only 300 lbs). estimates to rebuild $2100, does not include removal or re-installing. i just got a price on a 2GM20f complete for 7140 canadian or about $4500. I'm not sure about US customs tax yet. The real question is it possible to do this. Is the engine compartment big enough and does this engine line up ok. I really don't want to rebuild the old engine, because of being under powered. But at the same time i want everything to fit and work. I'm looking to talk to someone who has a hunter 30 and done this. I want to know all the problems I may face.

It should fit.

Jerry: I think it should fit. I believe the later models actually had the 2GM engine as the replacement for the YSM. Have you thought about looking around for a good used 2GM? I'd think that they price would be close to your rebuild price. A lot of owners have replaced their 2GMs with 3GMs so there should be a few around. You may also try some of the boat salvage yard or a Yanmar dealer.

Installed 3GM30F

I am not sure if the '79's are the same. I have a 1977 H30. I bought a 3GM30F for $6,500 in Jan 2000. This was a boat show price, and included tax and water lift muffler. A 2GM was about $800 less. The 3GM fits fine, BUT. I thought I would have to move the mounts in 1/2" on each side. I found out the wood stringers did not fill the fiberglass, and had to build out almost 1" on each side. THANKS PETE BUT I LOOKED AND FOUND THAT THE 3GM30 WAS 4 INCHES LONGER THEN THE 2GM2O. I'M NOT SURE I HAVE THE SPACE. DID YOU SHORTEN THE SHAFT. GIVE ME SOME DETAILS WHAT ALL YOU HAD TO CHANGE. DID YOU CHANGE ALL THE CABLES. ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME WOULD BE DEEPLY APRICIATED. I THINK I'M GOING TO HAVE THE MARINA DO IT. I'M AFRAID TO TRY IT MY SELF. I DID REMOVE THE OLD ENGINE BY MYSELF.

2GM20 refit, The LONG version.

I changed the strut to swing a larger prop. Everything worked out, but the difficulty factor was times 10. I changed the angle and raised the mounting surface much more than I thought I would need to. I did have to cut the shaft shorter, but I still had room for a drippless shaft seal. I did everything in CAD first, using some cardboard templates will work just as well to visualize how the new engine will sit. Even if the marina is doing the install, you should understand how much needs to be done before you start. If you have time and tools, $200 of West epoxy, fiberglass cloth

THANKS PETER, I REALLY APPREICATED THE INFORMATON. IT LOOK LIKE A LOT OF WORK. SINCE OUR LAST CONVERSATION, I'VE FOUND 2 OTHER COMPANIES TO GET A BETTER PRICE ON AN ENGINE. THEY ARE NOT YANMARS. BOTH ARE KUBOTA ENGINES. PHASOR MARINE IN FLORIDA AND NANNIDIESEL IN MAINE. THESE ARE 3 CYLINDER ENGINES. STILL LOOKING. CAN BUY FOR UST $300 DOLLARD MORE THEN THE ENGINE IN CANADA WHICH WAS $4500US. ONLY PROBLEM IS I HAVE TO GO PICK IT UP. THEY CAN NOT SHIP. IF YOU DON'T MIND PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS. I PULLED THE OLD ENGINE LAST SATURDAY. THANKS AGAIN
