engine problems or imagination?

I'm looking at 27s again.I've read the owners reviews of the 84 hunter with the westebecke 10 hp engine. All seem to mention lack of power of the engine and fuel problems,Could someone or all shed some light on these concerns also is the ten HP a two cylinder or single did the boats come with filters on the fuel system. One person made mention of the boat not backing very well an needing a bit of sternway to steer,but all boats do if you sail. wonder if a three blade prop can be a fix for the lack of power. That said all replies are valued! thanks in advance kd

3 blade prop and power

I can't speak to all your questions but I do know that lack of horsepower is just that a lack of power and a three blade prop will not fix it.A 3 blade prop will give you a bit more bite when backing and when in a rough sea. It will also help with reducing vibration but it will not give you more "power".If you do go with a 3 blade prop be sure to size it properly don't overprop thinking it will improve performance because the engine won't handle it.

thanks Pete you're right of course - 10 horses are 10 horses I was thinking of a better bite with a 3 blade prop and yes again uless you wish to repower oversizing the prop will do a number on the engine. I have seen the figure of two H.P. for every ton of vessel (At least I think thats what it was.)if this formula is correct then 10HP is about right I have in the past owned a 27 hunter with a 8HP yanmar sailed on a lake so tides and current weren't important. The boat seemed to have enough power to get it anywhere. Thanks again.

27's are underpowered

I have a '78 H27 with a Yanmar SB8, 8hp. It is fine for the lake but would be a real problem if on the coast trying to go against a tidal current. Mine has a 2 blade prop. the boat has bas prop walk to port but with practice you get used to it and learn to compensate. Overall they are great boats. You won't be dissatisfied with one. Good luck.
