Engine problem !..

Time is up for my old Albin O-21 engine. Today, in the early morning,
I searched the group mails in order to have an idea about the
choises. Some friends seems to be happy with Yanmar 1GM. Some others
are using Yanmar 2GM. The propeller size seems to be not optimized
yet. There are 3 blades users, foldable 2 blades users with different
prop sizes and pitch angles. Also I read about some problems like sea
water in the engine. After an hour I decided to write to the group
although I convinced myself for a Yanmar 2GM.

Can I fit it to my Vega ?
Which Propeller must be ordered ?
How can I eliminate the sea water problem ?

like questions are the remaning questions (May be there are more).

Please help if you have some experiance for the subject.

Best regards,
Akif

Hi Akif

Have a look at the Beta 13.5HP. We now have over 120 Vegas with the Beta
installed. Easy job and certainly a DIY job.

There are full instructions with photos available for the job. Many
Group Members have installed and will be more than willing to lend their
moral support. I am on the email for any queries.

Comes complete with shaft, prop, freshweter cooled, control lever,
cables etc. An easy Job, last one I did took two of us two easy days and
we are not super mechanics.

Cheers

Hi Akif;
I've read your e-mail and also Steve's. I'm only answering
about the Yanmar- but not downgrading the Beta.

I think getting a 2GM is wastefull. I have the 1GM with
2.61:1 gear ratio, 13"x8" 3 blade prop (that pushes me 6.5
mph at 3000 rpm), 25mm shaft (so you can use the existing
stearn bearing)- but very important: you can get an 8"
riser
for the mixing elbow that prevents water getting back into
the engine! As you wrote- there are reports of water in the
engine- that riser will minimize the possibility of water
backflow. (the existing mixing elbow sits quite low, and
even with waterlock etc., there is a chance of water
backflow that will kill the engine!)
I installed the 1GM myself- it requires a bit of grinding,
but overall an easy job.

Hi Akif,

I agree with Wilhelm--the 2GM is oversized for the Vega. When we were forced
to repower, there were not many choices. We considered both the 1GM and 2GM,
and, after doing much research and talking with countless people, selected
the 1GM. It has served us well since 1990. We installed it ourselves in a hot,
dusty boatyard in Florida with few problems. That being said, if we were to
repower now, we would seriously consider the Beta. When we repowered, we
wanted a 12 to 13 HP engine, but only the Westerbeke was available, which we did
not want. At this point in time, it sounds like the Beta might be the way to
go.

Smooth Sailing,

Akif:
I'll add my bit here by saying I have a Yanmar 2GMF. It's an older
model rated at 13 hp, and a 12" RH 10" 3 blade prop, which seems to
work well. One advantage of a 2 cylinder motor is that it runs a bit
smoother than a 1 cylinder ... less vibration. 13 hp is plenty, even
in heavy seas, headwinds, and strong currents.
If I were starting from "scratch" I'd certainly consider the Beta,
for ease of access and servicing and for support.

-Hi Akif,

Have you considered the Beta engine. I'm very happy with mine and
there are numerous Vegas with them installed--lots of support.
