I second this. I was experiencing the same issues with mine and replaced the fuel pump (after countless filter changes and exploring other possible causes).....zero issues since replacing the pump 2 years ago. Oh, and I got the pump from NAPA.
How old was your lift pump? Be interesting to know how long they last. Of course eng hours are a
factor.

2000 C310 with 2K hours on the engine. It was replaced by the PO just before we bought the boat last year. But I'm not sure if it was the original pump he replaced...

Did you solve problem by (1) cleaning tank (2) replace fuel filter (3) replace lift pump or all of the above?
Thanks for your comments.

I did 3. I have replaced the lift pump twice in the last year. I bought several cheap ones from amazon to have as backup. They work but don't seem to last as long. Although in fairness I have done about 1000 hours on the engine traveling about 7000 nm with a lot of that motoring or motor sailing.

Might be a good idea to get your fuel polished, Clyde. A good mobile polishing service will come to the boat and run the fuel through their machine several times, until it tests clean. Typically, any diesel system with a number of years and low hours will have some growth in the fuel. A bouncy ride is all it takes to stir up the gunk, and loss of power is the first sign of trouble.
