It seems that after bringing the engine up to operating temperature by cranking the RPM to 2600 coming back to slip from a mile away, the oil should be warm enough to change when I reached the slip.
The engine sat for about 30 minutes while I started to drain the oil. I sucked up only about 3 quarts including the oil in the oil filter.
Manual says 4 quarts of oil.
The oil stick read full before I drained the oil so where is the other quart of oil?
Last year I had a professionl mech do some work on the engine and change the oil while he was there so this is my first oil change.

If you sucked it out thru' the dipstick tube it enters the oilpan a little above the bottom, usually requires trying to insert the sucker hose so it bends down when it reaches the pan. I usually draw a vacuum on the changer then wiggle and move the hose in & out 'till you hit the oil towards the bottom. If you have a little plumbing device on your engine for oil changes they tend to be a little lower in the pan and if you can get a vacuum on it you'll get a little more. All that being said there was SOME oil still in the filter when you removed it and it can be really hard/impossible to get the last little bit out of some engines.

Did..

Did you suck it out through the dip stick tube or use the drain hose attached to the oil pan drain plug??

I used a seperate suction tube down the oil stick tube and did all those things you usually do to make sure you are getting all the oil out.
I added the new oil one quart at a time until the dip stick read full....3 quarts. After running the engine there was not any change on the dip stick reading I could see.
Next oil change I will suck out the oil, then remove the drain plug and see what is left.
This is one of those projects in which you would not have a big concern but would like to know the answer. When the manual indicates it holds 4 quarts and if you put in 4 quarts you would be over filling based on the dip stick reading and sometimes that's not good .

I did drain the oil from the filter into the holding tank to measure the total oil capacity.

Thanks you guys for taking the time to comment.

Paul,

I've always vacuumed the oil out of my engine using the attached drain hose from the bottom of the oil pan. I made a hose for my oil extractor that screws onto the nipple of the engine drain hose. This seems to remove all the oil and I've always been able to refill with four full quarts.
