Fun challenge.

Lycaman,

Just did this job last spring. Although like yourself, I only one support that was damaged, It was highly recommended that I proceeded with replace all four engine mounts to ensure proper balance.

I did not argue this recommendation, I really did not feel like going through this project twice.

We were 2 to do this job and tried to do it without taking the entire galley appart and it worked.

We simply removed the plywood board loacate at the end to the galley counter, this took some work but we managed.

Then from the engine, we disconnected any with a solid connection, Propeller shaft, exhaust hose connecting to water muffler, the control cables to ensure we had enough room to hoist engine.

We unscrewed all bolts holding engine onto engine mounted, but not one holding the mounts to the hull.

We set up a lifting jig, using lines and blocks from my dinghy davits system (10:1 ratio), then positionned a 6 x 6 (maybe overkill) above the entrance hatch, secured it so it would not move. Hoisted the engine a few inches, just enough for it (at least a corner) to clear the existing engine mounts.

One at the time, we unbolted the engine mount from hull, remove it and place the new one, losely bolt for later adjustment. We made sure to set the adjustment nut at a the same height as the one we were removing. Makes the job of engine/shaft alignment a lot easier.

Repeated this for all mounts.

Then lower engine. Installed top nut, losely so you can still adjust the alignment.

Go through the process of aligning the engine and shaft, roughly (this is thoroughly described in other posting on this site). Keep in mind that once in the water the alignment has to be fine tuned.

Reconnect, cables, exhaust hose etc.

Launch and align shaft.

Grab a beer and enjoy the new quietness of your engine!

What new mounts did you choose to use? Our C34 folks have been using K50s and K75s from Vetus.

On our C30...

we used the K50 Vetus, quite satisfied with them.

Lycaman can perhaps tell us what he is planning on using.

motor mount

Thanks so much for the advice on replacing the mounts. I ended up reusing the existing mount as the initial problem was deteriorating gelcoat and filler used under the mount that needed to be replaced. What I did was to unbolt the mount from the stringer in the hull and loosen the nuts connecting the mount to the engine that then allowed me to rotate the mount and provide sufficient area to epoxy in the deteriorated area. I did this to avoid having to raise the entire engine. I might add though that the mount bolt was seized to the engine requiring lots of Zep ( penetrating oil) and a compression hammer device to unseize the bolt. My initial intent was to replace all mounts while I was at it. However, since they seem to be functioning still ok I will leave this for another day. I will however keep your advice on how to proceed. Thanks again for your advice.
