engine maintence on 272LE

I am the new owner of a 1988 272 LE and need to know someting about maintence on the universal diesel. 1) oil change how often and type of oil2) fuel additives use them yes/no3) flush cooling system (fresh water alway) I have never been around diesels and need this info and any other anyone can addJim

Diesel engine maintenance

Hi Jim -There are certainly agreed upon guidelines for diesel engine maintenance, but people have different ideas on schedules. Persolly, I use 30 weight oil, change it once a season (or every 100 hours), don't use additives, and flush cooling system probably every couple years at most. Recomended maint.

Jim,I'd recomend the following schedule.Annualy,Change the engine oil and filter, use Rotella T or Delo 400 oil. Use the weight appropriate for your area.Change the fuel filters. Both the engine mounted and the primary filter.Change the trans oil. This is usualy ATF, and is under substantial strain.Biannualy, and changing all of the engine coolant.Learn how to bleed your fuel system, this is the most common operation you will do on the boat.Pat McCartinInland Marine DieselLake Lanier, GA
