Engine kill cable replacement

I have a new kill cable that I need to install in my '84 Hunter 31. When I feed it through the hole on the instrument panel I don't know where it goes and can't find it from inside the cabin. Does anyone have an easy fix? Do I need to take the panel off? What is the best way to route it to the engine?

I'd start by looking in your engine compartment and trace it back the other way....

It would be easier if you remove the control panel. To trace the path you will need to open lockers and remove inspection panes and perhaps bend and strech yourself in some unnatural way to guide it through. No easy way to do certain things in boats.

Can't you see where the old cable routed and use that info?

I removed mine this year for lubing. I tied a string to one end of the cable and pulled the cable out. The string allowed me to return to the same path when I reinstalled it. To actually see where the cable is you would have to remove the rectangle fiberglass cover in the stern berth which is under the binnacle. The cable runs between the cockpit deck and the stern berth ceiling. My cable is red(not sure if yours is). Look at the engine and you will see it there. And yes, I took the panel off. It gave me a chance to replace the bulbs too since I had it open. Good luck.

Kill cable

Unfortunately the prior owner removed the old cable so i can't attach a string to it and fish the new one through. I guess I'll remove the panel and try to fish it through that way. When I fish through the existing hole in panel it goes somewhere but I can't find it when I go down inside.

Sounds like you will need to remove the cover in the stern berth to gain access to pass the cable along. There are alot of screws but it comes off fairly easily. As stated above the cable should pass between the CP deck and the stern berth ceiling. Sounds like you will need string and a coat hanger to snake the string through first or maybe the cable will work??? I'm not sure what turns you will need to make since mine was attached to a string. The connection to the engine should be forward and starboard. I can send you a pic if you need the exact location. I wonder if cable clamp is still on the engine.
