Engine intake thru hull

We have Catalina 30, hull # 959. The thru hull for the engine intake appears to be one piece with the guard. There are no screws holding the guard/strainer to the hull. Anyone know if these are one piece? I want to remove it and use the larger intake for the engine. Also the new heater sits right on top of it so it's in the way.

These strainers are cast into the thru hull water intake as a one piece casting, and cannot be "unscrewed" unless you remove the entire thru hull fitting, which requires a haul out.
This is why some recommend not having a strainer installed at all on the outside of the hull. But it is advisable to have a strainer installed at least somewhere on the intake hose, before the engine to prevent debris from entering & damaging the engine or clogging the cooling system.

That looks like the fitting I pulled out lasts haul. It does have 2 screws on the forward part of the bill. My screws were hidden under paint until I unscrewed the inside and knocked it loose from the inside with a hammer.

I put a type 93 Marelon seacock in to replace with a bulkhead mounted strainer.

You apparently do have some exterior mounting screws on your strainer, but it is a one piece casting that has the inner threaded rod which attaches to the inner thru hull sea cock. So you can unscrew it from the outside of the hull, but if you attempt to remove it while in the water, you would have to completely unscrew the inner threaded sea cock, & let in an enormous amount of water. It would not make sense to do this, & is much less risky to wait until you haul out your boat & replace it properly without the risk of flooding.
