Good morning

I am buying my first sailboat. I had the engines inspected and the oils analyzed. Would you please take a minute and look it over. This is all new to me.

Also the engine is listed as a 75 hp yanmar but when I looked up what 50 kw was, it is 67 hp. Why the difference?

Thank you for your time and help.

Franklin

Congratulations on your first sailboat!!

The engine survey is typical and indicates the engine is in good condition. The generator oil analysis is normal as indicated, i.e., no issues. However, the transmission and engine oil analyses are concerning since it shows elevated sodium (Na) contamination, certainly co,pared to the generator oil analysis. Suggest having a Yanmar engine specialist change transmission and engine oil, run-in, analyze oils and perform further inspection.

The 4JH3TE engine is rated for 69 hp and 3700 rpm per the manual. My Hunter 46 has the same engine and it is a very strong engine that will drive the boat at hull speed under the right conditions.

Hi Sail sfbay
They are changing all the fluids now. I will ask the diesel mechanic who tested it. Thank you

I have to compliment you on getting an engine survey with an oil analysis of the generator, transmission and engine oils. Oil analyses are usually done with duplicate or triplicate samples so when the transmission and engine oils are re-inspected (after some period of run-in) obtain analyses on duplicate and triplicate samples. Also ask the Yanmar engine mechanic what possible root cause(s) of Na and water into the transmission.

One of the moderators needs to combine this with the other thread in Ask All Sailors. Cheers.
