I bought a 1994 Hunter 23.5 2 years ago, and it came with an electric motor that ran off 3 12v batteries. I sail a lot on the coast of sc, and an electric motor just won't cut it with the tide/wind.

I have never bought an engine for a sailboat before. Can anyone give me some ideas of what to look for. I assume I need between 5-10 hp.

I have a Tohatsu 6hp saildrive on my H22. You shouldnt need more that a 6hp. I picked it up for about $1300 from a local dealer. But try onlineoutboards.com they have free shipping. The Tohatsu is the same motor as the Nissan, just different colors. It also has a alternator built in.

One more question - is the 20" shaft length about the right size? Ive been in Iraq since May and dont come home until March, so I dont have a way to measure.

6 HP is More than Adequate

20" is fine 25" is better if your in rolly conditions or wnat to motor sail on a port tack.

I have a 6HP Mercury that I have converted from a long "20 inch"to an extra long 25" motor. Many of the motors size do not have a real alternator it is unregulated and puts out only a few amps. Not worth paying extra for but comes standard on most 25" motors.
