Engine cooling system - What is this?

Hey everyone,

The item in the pics is installed between the heat exchanger and the hot water tank.

Is this something I can use to change the coolant? If so what tools do i need to connect to this plug.

There is a pic with the cap on and one with the cap off.

Thanks

looks like a schrader valve for maybe bleeding the air out of the system

Well it is a schrader valve but you would never use it to bleed the air out of the system.
I'm thinking that a PO installed it so you can blow the raw out of the system during decommissioning using compressed air.
You say it is between the heat exchanger and HOT WATER TANK????? One has raw water the other antifreeze. With a 37 I'm not thinking you have raw water cooling so .......

Thanks for the responses. Yes this valve is installed between the heat exchanger (located on the enginer) and then it runs to the hotwater tank. This line contains the coolant. My boat has a Volvo Pento 2003 model.

I was hoping it would make flushing/changing the coolant easier.

I have this as well and it was Beneteau Installed in the same location as yours. I was told it was to bleed the air out of the system.

I have the same fitting on an '06 Beneteau with a 3YM30 Yanmar. I also thought it was to bleed air out of the cooling system. Planning to change the coolant / flush the system in a few weeks. Will find out then.

Could be an air bleed, to get air out of the coolant lines going to the water heater.. Ya sure would NOT want to do that with the engine hot ! .. could also be used (carefully) with an air compressor to blow all coolant out of the water heater when changing coolant..

Thanks Kloudie, that's a good idea. I have a portable "pancake" type compressor. I might give it a try to completely empty the system when I change coolant.

Not sure why you would blow out the coolant and leave the system dry - I understood the antifreeze acts as a rust/fouling inhibitor and is able to go lower than the pink stuff. After all, I don't know anyone that drains the antifreeze form the engine for winter.
I do blow out my fresh water system so that it can not freeze (don't like the pink stuff) but have always left the coolant side as is for the winter.
