Very often while plying the cold cold waters of San Francisco Bay I have wished for a convient way to get some heat into the main Salon. Short of installing a fuel oil fired furnace with accompaning exhaust stack or starting a bon fire on the galley table, one would think that there must be a product on the market that would produce cabin heat using the engine's coolant. (ie.... an engine coolant radiator with a fan behind which heats cabin air....) The boats (stock) hot water heater uses engine coolant to heat the water. It would seem to be a simple operation to install a simple air heater next to the hot water heater using the same hose.... Does anyone know of such a heater?

Bert, there are if fact such heater as you described. I don't know of any one brand however I have seen them at boat shows and in magazines. A friend has one on the flybridge of his Post sportfish. Other then telling you they exist (and work- very much like a car heater) don't have much more info needless to say you will need the engine running and a good battery for the 12 volt fan.

might want to check overtons.com and see what they have, I looked at one for my other boat (ski boat) and it ran like a car heater but only when it is running. John (please dont tell my sailing buddies about my motorboat

"Bus heater"
I'll have to look for the article, but in the last 2-3 months Cruising World, Sail, Practical Sailor (one of em') had an article about a simple install of what they called a "bus heater" that was a simple loop off the engine before the heat exchanger that worked like the other responses you've had with a 12 volt blower/fan inside it. Sounded like it worked pretty good and would do what you're looking to do. I'll be lloking for it and re-post here.

propane
i use one of those propane radiant heaters that screw directly onto a disposable propane tanks....lasts 3 to 4 hrs. on a one lb tank and works really well on those couple of real cold days i sail during the winter....don't forget to secure it well away from combustible materials....schaefer
