So I went to the boatyard to pick up my boat (94 hunter 335) to move her to her summer berth. Engine started fine (ygm30f). Then when I moved the throttle back to throttle down the cable broke. So I read he posts on replacing cables and I know what's involved. The throttle lever on the engine is very, very stiff and difficult to move. I sprayed some PB blaster on it so we ll see if it loosens up. Is a very stiff throttle lever indicative of other problems ? Also I wonder if anyone has moved the throttle and clutch off the pedestal to a position on the bulkhead like below the engine instruments

Why not just replace the cables with new ones? They have lasted for 16 years, the new ones may last twice that long if you get high quality ones (Teleflex/Morse).

Just did mine

We just replaced our cables on a 1991 33.5. Twenty one years seemed long enough for the originals and didn't want to take any chances especially after a neighboring boat got locked in reverse while leaving the slip and rammed our stern ($1200 of fiberglass repair). While it seemed like a easy enough job, it ended up taking much more time than we thought (nothing new here). One thing we hadn't figured on was the necessity of removing the pedestal because the cables are wedged between a metal collar and the inside of the pedestal (I guess to make sure they are clear of the steering cables). This in turn requires loosening up the steering cables to move the chain off the wheel. Somewhere on this site I read that the bolts holding the pedestal to the floor would likely be frozen since they were stainless going into Aluminum. But we had no problems and I used an impact drill to avoid stripping the head. The bolts are attached to nuts reachable underneath and the front two are threaded into nuts imbedded into the floor, so the Aluminum pedestal really has no threads to get frozen to the stainless bolts.
I really can't imagine putting the controls anywhere else but high on the pedestal so they are close at hand. Happy fishing.
