Engine control cable

I have a H34 83 with the Merriman Yacht Specialties post. For a period of 20 minutes I had to push and hold the throttle full speed. When I released it, it went directly to iddle position. Since then I have to use a bongie cord to hold my RPM to 2600-2700.

I still have control, push and back, so the cable is not broken. I detach the cable from the engine and even the cable loose, the same thing happens, the handle comes back to to idle position.

Ever happened to anyone ?

Thanks in advance

Andre- it sounds like your J clamp on your throttle cable has slipped loose or never was there. This is the Hunter solution to adding sufficient friction to the cable to keep it from slipping back.

Mine was at the side of the engine- port side- on the throttle cable. It simply crushes the cable cover to add friction to the movable cable. I moved mine to the point where the throttle cable comes down from the pedestal inside the cover over the aft berth. The directions say to mount it near the control head but I couldn't find room or access inside the top of the pedestal. It works much smoother in the location at the bottom of the pedestal.

On the rear side of the pedistal post you will find a bolt head. In the inside of the post looking down from the top you will locate a clamp plate that is attached to that bolt. The clamp plate retains the throttle cable and the shift cable. It would sound like the throttle cable has come loose from the clamp plate. With a few long instruments and some luck you should be able to force the cable back in position. Then retighten the bolt.

Good luck fishing

If you do add a cable brake I'd like to point out that they always show the threaded end of the bolt applying pressure to the cable. You are much better off reversing the bolt so that the head of the bolt is against the cable. It won't damage the cable sheathing as the threaded end can and works just as well.

So if I understand well your suggestions, I just have to put that Clamp "Morse Controls Throttle Cable Brake" and squeeze the control cable with it ??? Could that be that simple ???

Thanks again.

Andre,

If you pull your compass, there is a hole in the control head in line with the throttle control. Down inside there is a small screw. If you turn it it pushes on the rotating part of the throttle control increasing friction. The bottom side of that screw is a plastic insert. You might give that a try too.

The attached picture is looking from the bottom. You can see that friction screw where the throttle mechanism passes by.

FYI, the clamp that Edson sells is stainless and shaped for the cable. It looks like a regular clamp but for the shaping, and costs a bunch more. It works though.

Do you have a part # I can't seem to find special one for sheathed cables
You know, I can't find it in their catalog even though I purchased one (lots of years ago). However, it was just like the ones on the bottom of this page which look like standard stainless steel cable clamps. So, maybe the place to start is the local marine supply store. Just be conservative with the amount of torque you put on it to start. You can always tighten it further. Good luck!

Andre, you can buy the cable clamp at West's Marine. The galvanized version is about $1, and SS version is about $5. Make sure you also buy lock bolts so it does not work loose. You will also need a long socket to get it tight enough.
