Own a H376. Wondering about making some type of engine compartment fan driven vent to vent out hot air/smell. In S. Cal we usually motorsail when headed up to Catalina. It would be nice to be able to vent that out.
Any suggestions?

Thanks. Bob.

Some dryer vent hose and a 12 volt computer fan. Route the hose to a convenient opening and install a vent somewhere. I got the fan at an electronics surplus house for $4.00. Its ball bearing and draws 0.2 amps. I know it looks klugey (sp?), but there is a future plan someday to move it to one of the cubby holes in the cockpit. During the winter its a great hand warmer. It really cools the engine compartment down and prevents smells from coming into the cabin.

Did this a long time ago. Really makes a big difference in the engine compartment temperature. The cool air coming in is dumping on top of my alternators. It reaches back and I have it tied into the stringer back by the muffler. It pulls cool air from the grid. The exhaust is the top left one in the picture. Its ducted out to the cockpit.

Can you provide a link to the in-line fan in the upper left, or provide the name and description of the part?

There is a big 4" fan bringing the air in.And 3" fan seen on the left taking out the air. They are the bilge blowers from West Marine. Yellow tail I think they are called. They are 12v.You can actually by squirrel cage blowers that are quiet as well.

Still Haven't Gotten Around .................

............... to writing a completion to that project.

The fan was moving plenty of air but the high pitched whine of the fan required ear plugs if you were motoring for any length of time.

Solved the problem by deep sixing the 3" Shurflo Yellow Tail Blower and substituting in a 3" DetMar blower ($16.95). Much quieter. The final touch for reducing the noise was to get rid of the noise conducting aluminum hose and replace it with vinyl hose. Aluminum hoseon the suction side is still used inside the engine compartment to deal with the high heat once everything is shut down.

The blower is now quiet enough that it can't be heard over the engine at WOT. The engine exhaust is underwater so things have quieted down significantly.

With your larger engine, you may want to consider a 4" fan as you'll need lots of air to cool that beast.
