Engine cable

I am having issues with the cable that changes gears. The shift lever starting sticking, and now has failed completely. I can shift from neutral to reverse, but I cannot go into forward. I've disconnected the cable from the transmission, and I can shift gears with no problem. The funny thing is the cable seems to be about an inch to an inch and a half short. I'm not sure if the cable just sticks at a certain point or what. Has anyone had this issue and replaced the cable? If so where did you get the cable, and is there any trick to hooking up the new cable? The end of the cable that hooks up to the transmission is spring loaded, so I'm not sure how this thing works. I can find no documentation on this either in the Hunter manuals or the Yanmar manual.

Generally, the shift cables are a series 3300 cables but you will need to know the length as there are various sizes. If any cable goes thru the pedestal, one trick is to remove all the nuts and rubber pieces from the cable and send it thru a small tube down and thru to the bottom of the pedestal and then extract the small tube via the other end. Saved a lot of time with that little trick.

Can't quite figure out this "trick" you have described

Find a small tube that you can insert the cable into and push the tube thru the pedestal down to the bottom of the pedestal next to a hole at the base. Push the cable thru making sure you have a hand on it underneath inside. Then take the tube and pull it out with the remaining cable stationary. Makes it a lot easier to fish the cable thru the pedestal housing.
