How viable is the use of one of the Engel compressor driven portable cold boxes as a replacement for the traditional ice box? How good is the insulation? How much is the real power consumption?

RE: Portable Cooler to a Freezer

I tested most of the new small 12 volt refrigeration systems for my new book and here are a few of the Engel 45 performance figures: These test were performed in a 24 hour controlled environment 78.5° to 81.2° F. in still air except for the units cooling fan. As a cooler at 46.9° F. the average amp per hour was 0.45 amps. As a high temp. Freezer at 21.2° F. the average amp per hour was 1.47amps. As a low temp. Freezer at -2.65° F. the average amp per hour was 2.39 amps. The amazing figure in this test as a low temperature unit, with a 82° drop in temperature the outside cabinet skin temperature only dropped five degrees This is better than some of the VIP insulated hatches. There may be other good potable units out there but I would rate this one with Five Stars. This unit seams to have everything, price, long service life, good insulation and thermostat temperature control from a cooler to a low temperature freezer.
