Engage transmission at lower rpms

I have 2 questions. First, when my 29.5 is hauled out, is it nesc. to bleed the pss dripless stuffing box to ensure water lubricates the shaft. (twice I've had it hauled and the transmission moans and groans for a little, then everything is fine.) Second, is it possible to make the transmission engage at lower rpms. The speed at which I want to leave the marina is at that cusp, and the transmission will engage and disengage until I increase the speed. (maybe thats why everyone else is zooming out of the marina. I like to take it easy! I have a yanmar 2gm fresh water cooled.

Lowering engine RPMs

Not sure what type of throttle/shifting lever arrangment you have (some are separate and some are combined), but the RPMs have nothing to do with whether the transmission is in gear. The shifting and throttle are independent controls on the engine. The engine should not be shifting in and out of gear at low speeds. Not sure why it would unless you have a combined throttle/shift and its out of adjustment. I have a 3GM but if its the same, follow the engine throttle cable to the throttle lever on the engine, you should be able to adjust idle RPMs with the adjusting screw. I think around 7-800 is minimal. If the RPMs are too low the engine will buck and shake when its in gear.

Good Idea to Bleed PSS Dripless

While the angle will probably dump most of the water, and that which is left will be in flexible rubber, it isn't a bad idea to pop the drippless allowing the water to drain. Whatever you do, remember you have to burp it in the spring to when you drop the boat in the water to get the air out of the fitting. Jim
