I was never real fond of the shuttle, but it did the job it was touted for and its nice they are preserving them. Im glad theyre planning something more serious but it sure would have been nice to have had it online to reach the station before grounding the shuttles.
The year before last were were out on the lake and heard several huge explosions, and we were positive something in town blew up. Learned later the shuttle went right overhead.
I was stationed at Patrick AFB, FL and was blessed to work the first 8 shuttle launches. As a kid growing up I was always fascinated with space (baby boomer here). This was a gift from above to be part of the shuttle era. After retirement and living in Texas We would always make a point of sitting outside ay night when the mission would fly over the state and watch the shinny dot speed across the sky. I remember when Columbia flew over texas and exploded over the state. It sounded like a thunderous boom and actually shook the house. I still have shoulder patches ffrom the missions I was supprt on. A gone era for the US.
