1980 Hunter 36 Anyone tackled this problem: rigging a emergency tiller to the rudder post. I am not the original owner so's I don't have a clue whether Hunter had anything like this (emergency tiller) as an option. I did notice that my rudder post has two thru drilled holes in the rudder post aligned 90¡ to the rudder plane, see photo. Is this OEM or PO work? I'm looking for any help / suggestions toward having a tiller in case of a wheel failure, ie how to deal with a steering failure. TIA

My H31 has a system....

My H31 came with an emergency tiller. It's an L shaped metal piece that fits into the top of the rudder post. The inserting end of the tiller and the post end are keyed. Im sure its original equipment. My setup looks like yours except that there is a round deck plate lined up with the top of the rudder post. It is under the flip up cover for the fresh water fill. You remove the cover on the deck plate, insert the emergency tiller into the top of the rudder post, and steer the boat.

Clarification

To get a quick sense of this, just ask the guy in the next slip to show you his. It's pretty straightforward but hard to explain.

Call Hunter

Try calling hunter and see if they made one back than I know most newer hunters have a plate that you remove and put the emergency handle go's on top of the rudder post, maybe you can get one from hunter or make your own.

Can you show more photo's of the cockpit, looks like you can maybe make a handle and bolt it on.

Pauls got it

Buz, access the TOP of the post by flipping up the hinged wood tread on the back of the cockpit coaming and unscrewing the plastic deck access cover. The emergency tiller drops INTO the rudder post. Post will have a couple of flanges inside and the tiller will have a couple of slots cut out to seat around the flanges. My guess is your boat doesn't have the emergency tiller on board anymore otherwise you would have stumbled across it and figured out what it was. I can take some tiller pics and measurments this weekend on my 37C, which is basically the same boat as yours.

Clarification, take 2.....

I'd be careful about how I approached the guy in the next slip on the subject of getting him to 'show you his'......... *yks Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8

Simple Plan

Mine came with one. Simply a Pipe with a 'U' shaped fork on one end drilled to match the holes in the Rudder Post that you are talking about. Mine was just laying next to the Rudder Post under the seat. Take a look around yours might be tucked into or wedged somewhere nearby. It's pretty short, and when installed the helmsman's seat has to remain open so the pipe/tiller can stick out into the cockpit. I haven't tried mine out yet, but probably will this summer and see if it really works as setup. Sail On. Ross

If you cann't find one on board - make one

My '80 33 didn't have an emergency tiller and it cost me a tow when the cable came loose from the steering mechanism. Check the cable whenever you are working in the area. I made my emergency tiller the same weekend. Just took two 2" dia. pipes and fittings - elbow and such to make a heavy tiller which will work anytime the wheel steering fails.

One additional thought -

My 79-H30 has the access plate over the top of the shaft as Paul described. The tiller extension slips onto the top of the shaft, then you remove your wheel from the Edson pedestal and fit it on top. Just something to think about if you have to build one. The access plate are also fairly easy to install and have a waterproof seal.
