I am trying to get ideas on the best design for an emergency tiller on my 81 H33. I have the (an) adapter that fits over the rudder post and now need ideas from others for the rest of the tiller. Due to the foward angle of the rudder post, the pedestal is definitly in the way, the tiller (it seems to me) has to point backwards. Is this the only way? What have others done? Any ideas are appreciated.

H33 emergency tiller

My 79 H33 came with an emergency tiller which is nothing more than an aluminum pipe bent in an l shape with a square recess at the bottom to fit over the rudder shaft. Let me know if you want me to and I'll measure it the next time I am down there. tgarnold1@msn.com

The Proper Angle

The rudder post is not straight up through the hull; as you said, it's at an angle. Obviously the pedastal is in the way for a right angle turn on the emergency tiller, but what if you built the tiller to be custom for the cockpit. Measure the angle of the rudder post to straight up (toward the sky). Weld a pipe (of desired length) to the adapter at that angle. You know have tons of leverage but you have a vertical tiller instead of a horizontal one. The tiller will work the same way as the wheel however; move the new vertical tiller arm in the direction you want the bow to go.

As with Terry's response I would be glad to supply deninsions etc. on my emergency tiller. By the way the shaft turns aft to clear the pedistal. Have tried it just for drill and it works fine. Everyone should mount their emergency tiller and try using it, before they really need it.
