O.K., I just bought this great boat! 1980 H33 Can't wait to get her out to sea, but taking my time and going thru her thoughly, go the Garmin 421S hooked up, found the bilge pump is in-op, no biggy, but where is the emergency tiller located at, or should be located at, and what am I looking for? lol!

The actual emergency tiller should be stored in one of the lockers if you have one. I don't know what yours would look like but it should be an "L" shaped piece of metal with a coupler on one end and long enough on the other to give you some leaverage. Where does that tiller attach to? Usually to a slot on top of the rudder shaft which should be in the boat's centerline behind the wheel steering assembly. Check inside that locker which doubles as a helm seat.

the handle might be found on top of your water tank in the v-berth. Mine was in there but it had slid forward so you couldn't see it at a quick glance. I suspect this was its intended location as it doesn't seem to lay flat in any other lockers.

Mine fits in the helm locker, which seems the logical place for it.

New e-Tiller

If it was like mine, it might be the pile of rust you might find behind the water heater. I need to put another handle on mine. The bent galvanized pipe (as shown in rardi's picture below) is completely rotted. The head (business end of the e-tiller) is still serviceable.

Update: I stopped at home depot on the way home tonight and picked up a few parts for the e-tiller, and just finished putting the e-tiller back together. The head of the old e-tiller slid in perfectly to a union. I reinforced this joint with a SS-coupler covering the union. I used JB Weld for the steel to PVC joint. The rest of the joints were standard PVC adhesive. I will reinforce these joints with ss-band/hose clamps. The angle of the handle is about 10 degrees higher than the old one, but it will work. I will test it out this week to see how she feels under power.

Rich, please tell me you didn't just make an emergency tiller out of PVC pipe!

 As a temporary, yes. The one in the boat was falling apart (rusted out galvanized thin wall pipe) and I needed something quick until I had a suitable replacement. I have tested it out and it works fine in the boat. The PVC is fine as a casing but it is not very strong structurally. Add a structural core and it will be OK.
