Raising the sail on my new Snapfurl...ended up using the winch to get the sail up....which led to... The wire portion of the jib halyard parting. Good news - the jib is up, and it sure is hell ain't coming down anytime soon. Furler furls. Bad news - need new halyard. Believe both (main and jib) halyards are the originals (1979 boat)...line and wire types. May as well replace both. Notice that Catalina Direct has external all line halyards and since the mast is going to have to come down anyway... Anyone with any advice would be appreciated. Between business trip, my next off day, and ordering requirements - have to get the halyards ordered in the next 24 hours. Thanks in advance for any input.

How to remove halyard.

If you have the boat in a slip, and there's a West Marine store nearby, you could remove the old halyard without lowering to mast and get a replacement. At the end of your rope halyard, sew another piece of light l;ine the the end. . about 50 ft long. Remove your old halyard, pulling the line thru the masthead, and back down. Cleat both ends to the mast, and cut the thread. Take your old halyard to West marine, either by a new one all together, or use their tools at the back of the store to replace your wire section of the halyard. Return to your boat, sew the end of the new halyard to the light line, and pull your new halyard back thru the masthead, and go sailing!

Changing wire/braid halyard to all braid?

If you are going to run a braid halyard in place of the wire/braid, the braid probably will be too large diametrer for the mast head sheaves.

Snapfurl takes no. 5 luff tape

Scott: So this does not happen again, it seems to me the luff of your jib has a no. 6 tape instead of the no. 5 tape called for with a Schaefer Snapfurl furler. The no. 6 tape is too large. You should not require a winch to get the jib hoisted onto the furler. No. 6 tapes are the most common size put into furling jibs. One needs to specifiy a no. 5 luff tape for a Schaefer Snapfurl. Don't think the diameters are that much different? Take a 3/16 inch drill (this is a no. 6 luff tape size) and just try to get it into the 5/32 inch hole on your drill guage. Don't go so well do it.

DIAMETERS?!?

Brent, Thanks for the response - it is timely. I was thinking the same thing. I had a hank on jib and decided to buy the new furling system AND the new genoa at the same time. When I ordered through Catalina Direct, I talked to the tech about how Shaefer was different then most in that it required a #5 luff and we SPECIFICALLY ordered the new sail to be a #5 to match the Shaefer Snapfurl. What I would like to know is - are the two diameters you mentioned the correct diameters for #5 and #6 respectively? If so, I would like to measure my luff and check to see if I really got a #5. I have effectively destroyed my new furling system and took the entire thing off when I pulled the mast down to replace both halyards with lines. Even the new forestay has begun to unravel and needs to be replaced. Will probably have to cut the sail from the furling system somehow (without damaging the sail). There are, I'm sure, a number of things that could have gone wrong. Undoubtedly, I am at fault for some of them - including buyer beware. But I would be interested in getting some help from the appropriate manufacturers if I bought a #5 luff genoa and received a #6. Thanks in advance.
