Our boat will be spending most of her time in the Med and we hope eventually to live on her most of the year. Primarily, we want the ability to send and receive email and access the web for information, but often we will be away from a mobile phone signal. Any one give me a clue as to the best method to get data at sea, without spending a small fortune and that uses equipment that is easy to understand and use. Any advise gratefully received.. David, winling.org works great, it requires a SSB radio. I communicated with my brother and his wife for the eight years they traved around the world.

Does WinLink work...

On other than Amateur Radio? I was going to also recommend WinLink but for the fact it is a Ham radio thing.

For E-mail...

Actually with an SSB you would subscribe to sailmail for $250 a year for the service which works well and is widely used. Go to sailmail.com for full details and downloads. As to "inexpensive"...this reuires the purchase and installation of both an SSB and a Pactor modem. Figure around $3.5-4K and that ain't inexpensive of you don't already have an ssb. I believe some of the cell phone systems in Europe have pretty good med coverage and may be cheaper to use. Finally...if this is not a permanent vacation...you might think about an Iridium sat phone.
