I am in the process of upgrading my electronics on my boat to include GPS and Radar and was considering only Raytheon. A recent "problem" with no part availability on a Autohelm 4000 product has me wondering if this is a good idea. I would like to hear "your opinion" on expericences with Raytheon and other vendors of this type of gear. Thanks in advance for your participation.

Nexus for me!

Rob: I am in the process of upgrading my instruments. After looking around I decided that Nexus System 3000 is the way to go. Practical Sailor determined that this was a best buy. This system was also recommended by several of the Marine stores. I just purchased the Nexus System3000 from West Marine for $1050 (about $200 below anyone elses price). The system contains the mast head wind transducer, knot log/temp, depth, compass and a server with a single display. The system can handle upto 32 additional displays which all daisy-chain together. The system has a NEMA IN and NEMA OUT connection for whatever GPS and Autopilot that you want to use. They also have their own. Very nice system and worth looking at. Have seen them around for $1249-1299 in most places. Regarding your problem with Raytheon parts may have something to do with the sale of this division. They want to get their inventories reduced to make things look better for the sale.

Ratheon

I have had good luck with Rathoen, had some repair work done and was treated well.(repair need was not the fault of the electronics but a sort circuit in boat wiring) The 4000 autopilot is now been replaced by the 4000 plus and I had not trouble getting mine fixed. Call Ratheon in New Hampshire and ask if the parts are still available. I think you will find they are at the factory repair center vs. a dealer. Happy with mine and I'm sure that the others are good products also but Ratheon factory repair gave me good service after a local dealer was not so good. So maybe it is who you deal with! As far as the GPS goes make sure you get the new waap type Good Luck !
