Looking at buying an 160amp electromaxx alternator package with the serpentine belt conversion. Does anyone have any experience with Electromaxx?

A bit of overkill at 160 amps don't yo think?
for the record your BATTERIES will control how many amps are produced. The alternator will bump the voltage up to 14.4 volts (just like your stock 56 amp one) and the same number of amps will flow since the BATTERIES have the same internal resistance. the max output of an alternator that big will never be realized unless you have upwards of 1000 AH bank size (which would be very cool but I doubt that a 35'er has room for that many batteries)
I'm sure it is a fine product but I'm sure but what is the need for it?

Thanks, That's great info. Nicely done presentation. I have installed several Balmar packages in previous boats - how does the Electromax compare to the Balmar? Their charge curves seem to be much better but how do they measure up in the real world of charging?

it would make DC welding while the engine is running possible

Sorry, havent changed the picture and don't have the 35 footer anymore. I have 2 8D AGM batteries for a house bank with a capacity of 510 AH. The AGMs will take a charge rate of up to 40% of capacity so no it is not overkill.

Both are great alternators. I feel the E-Maax alts run slightly cooler into higher loads and they are hot rated at 250F vs. 225F. Both the Balmar 6 series and the E-Maax alts are loosely based on Delco 130D alts but the cases are cast by Balmar and E-Maax. Either brand is good but E-Maax offers you the whole kit.

Please keep in mind that those curves are engine RPM at 2.25:1 ratio. Balmar's curves are alternator shaft RPM. Be sure you are comparing apples to apples. Even if you go with an E-Maax I would still suggest the Balmar MC-614 regulator to go with it with both alt and temp sensors.

Thanks Maine Sail, so would you recommend the regulator Electromaxx sells with the package then? I also have a Balmar ARS4 that I could use but it does not have temperature sensing.

I am not a huge fan of either the E-Maax reg or the Sterling reg when compared to the MC-614. While they will work fine the MC-614 just does so much more and is infinitely adjustable. With this alt and 510Ah of AGM you will want at least the alt temp sensor..

I bought the 140 Amp alternator with serpentine belt kit, it came with the Sterling ProReg D with the alternator and battery temperature probes.

The alternator also has an internal regulator that will take over should the external regulator fail.

I have not installed it on the boat yet. It looks to be very well made and came with what appear to be proper instructions.

I live in Canada not far too from Electromaax, so bought direct from them, very nice people to deal with. Responsive to emails or phone calls, knowledgeable about the product. A pleasant experience, good value for the money.

In regards to alternator temperature I notice the Electromaax is only anodized not powder coated, I think it may be able to radiate the heat a bit better without the powder coating.
