Electrolysis

Having just read an article about electrolysis, I am now very nervous. I have a 93 H27OB that I keep in a fresh water lake most of the year. For a couple of weeks each summer, we trailer it to salt water where, late at night, I hear this strage poping and crackling sound in the hull that we never hear at the lake. Our dock at the lake has no shore power, and all we have for sacrificial zink is what is on the outboard lower unit. The boat came from a dealer new without any zinks on the keel or elswhere. Now I am thinking that for the two weeks we spend in salt water each year, at docks with shore power, what I am hearing is the sound of my keel bolts being corroded away. Am I nuts? Should I pull the keel to have the bolts checked? Should I install a zink on the keel?

Crackling....Popping sounds..

are not from electrolysis(most likely). If we are talking about the same noises that I have heard, it was explained to me that it is caused by marine life in the salt water. I can't remember if it was mussels, barnacles, etc but something like that from the opening/closing of shells. I would not be alarmed for the 2 weeks a year the boat is in salt water. I would probably raise the outboard when not in use but I don't have any experience with outboards.

Intentional White Noise

I have experienced the same problem when I docked in the Norfolk area near the Naval Base. A local explained that it was noise intentionally transmitted to prevent "listening" or spying.

Oh yeah! I know em' well!!

Brine shrimp are your culprits. I'm a diver and every time I scrape the bottom I find myself covered in them. They sound like thousands of small, muffled firecrackers endlessly popping. The sound is created when they snap their little tails to produce movement. They produce alot of sound for being SO tiny! So don't worry, You're not rusting to death.
