Great info, all.

Sumner - the minibox DC-DC converter is a great find. Thanks for that!

"How much current does that setup use? My radio does not even twitch the ammeter but my laptop and DVD TV/monitor suck up about 5 amps (same as a reefer!!!)"

Link 2000 says that when the inverter is running w/ computer and 2 (A/C)monitors,
amp draw is ~ 12amps.
That's why I'm switching to DC monitors and trying to power the desktop DC, also. Although, I suspect that even running all DC will only save a few amps.

Usually about half as reported by skippers who have done that.

WOW! 12 amps! That is my entire reefer/freezer energy budge plus 2 amps.
It's your boat and your money so more power (sic I crack myself up) to you, but I'm thinking I'd rather have an ice maker.

See you on the waters

Yes, Bill, I noted that, too, but "your boat, your choice." I suppose navigating on the wide screen through those reef-strewn waters while watching Captain Ron on the big screen has its advantages. :)

I'll probably regret posting this and maybe I'm misunderstanding you, so if I am sorry, but Buck has been honest about what he currently has and what he is trying to accomplish. I see no need for putting him down for that, which to me it seems you are doing. I think a number of us have learned due to the fact he posted.

Hope I'm wrong and sorry again if I am,

Sumner

It's OK, Sum, these guys are just jealous ...

Bill... " but I'm thinking I'd rather have an ice maker."
I forgot... another A/C load I have on all the time is the cube freezer ($150, sold to med ofcs for storing vaccines, etc at -20deg.). Makes a GREAT ice maker and, of course, an excellent additional freezer.... Another reason I guess I'll have to leave the inverter on.

And Stu, ... " I suppose navigating on the wide screen through those reef-strewn waters while watching Captain Ron on the big screen has its advantages."
Screen on screen IS great, but, Capt Ron isn't nearly as entertaining as local market news, weather and "I Love Lucy" reruns in Spanish.....
