Maybe just the main breaker..
Breakers do fail. If you can turn on the main breaker and it stays on without any current flow, it does not mean it is good. If you flip on another breaker(causes current to flow) and the main trips, it could just be because the main is bad. Your smell could have come from the breaker. You may have nothing wrong at all - other than your main breaker. Take your main breaker out and swap it with another breaker of equal value from your panel of equal rating and see if your problems go away. Or you could just bypass the main breaker completely since the feed from your shore power has a protection breaker. If the main feed breaker trips, then you have issues.
