New partner to a 88' or 89' Catalina 30 and the current owners are not sure what key is used to access the back of the electrical panel. I would guess that is the same as the engine key, however wanted to confirm before further efforts to unlock as it does not currently unlock. Thanks.

Is there a keyhole? If so it may open with a small screwdriver inserted and rotated....

Not necessarily. Maybe when the boat was new but after 32 years it's quite possible that the ignition switch has been changed. Or somebody lost the panel keys and replaced the lock.
I think I'd try forcing it with a screwdriver after thoroughly searching the boat for a key that works.
Also try applying inward force on the trim holding the lock. There are a lot of wires behind the panel including the battery cables to the battery switch. They can put some pressure outwards on the panel.

On my boat the keys stay in the lock.

I've attached a photo of the inside of the lock, it looks like you might be able to spin it with some minor force if the mounting hole is round.

There is an actual keyed lock in place that could be just frozen. I do not want to force it if it is not the same as the engine key.

Thanks Ward,

I am guessing this is all original equipment. I have accessed behind the panel by removing the 6 screws and I can remove the lock if a little WD40 does not help.

Regards,

I got piqued 'cause this was under 'Ask a Hunter Owner' and I have an H30T. No lock here. But I see it's a C30 in question.

Appears I selected the wrong forum in error, sorry about that.

I was just surprised that Catalina bothers to lock the panel. Having to unscrew it should be a hint to be careful

Haven't you heard the secrets Catalina hides behind the panel are legendary. Think of it as a Chastity Belt for Boat electricals.

Welcome to the SBO forums @epk .

May the locked panel be the worse of your discoveries. I suspect, as with all boats, there will be more.

Have fun sailing.
