My favorite part is the use of wood screws. Didn't stop me from buying the boat, time to start ripping out wiring!

Anyone got a worse electrical picture to post to make me feel better?

At least it's close to the water system. This way, in case you have an electrical fire you can always put the fire out with....

Ours was worse. Sorry no pics, but it goes like this:
I bought the boat cheap and knew it had electrical issues. That's because when I said something to the seller after seeing wire nuts in the engine compartment he said "Don't worry about the electrical. My brother is an electrician and he does stuff right." Sure enough, the shore power was all wired with solid conductor house wiring with rusting metal outlet boxes. I didn't find a single power wire linger that about 12 inches without multiple splices. The splices were just wires twisted together some with electrical tape on them. Did I mention no circuit breakers or fuses even in the shore power. Also the shore power ground wasn't even connected.

Now all the primary power and ground wires are new with marine grade wire and circuit breakers

The fact that the boat did not catch on fire or the fact that the critical stuff still worked

I have seen a lot of these home grown wiring jobs. It's a wonder that more boats don't burn to the water line due to electrical glitches. I have also seem wiring work done by amateurs that would put professional work to shame.

I still have a spaghetti monster behind my panels and since they are not mounted on swinging access doors I'm befuddled how any hands got in there over the years to keep systems running. And yes, it is all still running!

Will need to cut a panel and remount everything when I get the nerve up for opening Pandora's Box!

Your in good (bad) company Ken! I too couldn't get my stereo working for two years. And I felt the same way-- Didn't know where to begin either. Sometimes no power sometimes power but no sound. Turned out the stereo itself was on its last leg and intermittently working -- swapped it with an old car stereo and voila music blaring out!

Check at the circuit panel to see that the circuit is energized when on, and if so then find a cheap stereo to swap with it. When I realized I did indeed have power to the unit then swapping the stereo seemed a good next step.

Power + working unit should = music

(unless speaker/wiring is the culprit)

On some units you also have to power up the memory (blue?) lead.

I understand the blue or 'memory' power lead is to maintain the preset channels
