My 78 H27 came with only one battery. I'm thinking of redoing the electrical system, adding an additional battery dedicated to starting and leaving one for all other systems. Has anyone else out there done this?? Any problems?? All suggestions and comments are welcome Thanks

Common upgrade...

I have only been on this web-site for a couple of years but there is no topic more discussed. Ok, maybe leaks get more attention. But "has anyone else done this?", I think everyone has done this(or had it done). So you should get lots of advice on this. Do you have the boat's wiring diagram? You can see a not very good one at: http://people.ne.mediaone.net/tlyons/tdl/hunter/index.html My own solution doesn't agree with most of what you can read in the Forum Archives. Everyone seems to like golf cart 6-volt batteries or the newer AGMs. I replaced a wet-cell that was the starter battery with a gel. I have three batteries and they are the same make and rating, all gels. My charger(and alternator) are connected to the starter battery. The two house batteries are isolated(switch #2). But I have a "combiner", a device that senses when the starter battery has reached full charge. The combiner completes a circuit so that the charger/alternator is then charging the house batteries. I have no problems starting my Yanmar with a standard gel battery. Gels can be mounted anywhere, even upside down. They are maintenance free, stay on the boat all winter. Five months after I hauled her out I put her back in and the Yanmar started immediately :) If you need more detail I could e-mail a sketch. Good luck. Ed(schencked@bfusa.com)
