Electrical issue?

I have been chasing what I think is an electrical issue. A while back my refrigerator wouldn't start. When I turned he refrigerator on, I would see a voltage dip and it would just continue to cycle, not start but attempt to start. If I started the motor, the refer would start just fine. The two 4D house batteries were about ten years old so I thought, maybe it was time to replace them. So I did...that was about four weeks ago. Sitting in my boat yesterday, I could hear the refer cycling again. Sometimes it would start but cycling to attempt to start mostly.

Along with this, I have an 700 watt inverter that powers a small LED TV that draws less than 100 watts. If the refer is on (or attempting to start) the inverter sounds a low voltage alarm.

All this has occurred with fully charged batteries. I also thoroughly cleaned all the connections to the batteries and the Phase Three Charger when I installed them. I've tried switching the batteries to All to see if I could get the refer to start with out starting the motor. Which is odd now that I write this post.... I can start my engine but not my refrigerator... I think I may have a bad refrigerator unit....?

Good detective work, so far. Other things to check: the fridge wiring connections at the panel switch and at the unit, the fuse in the electronic control module (I replace mine every few years), and the voltage at the unit when it tries to start (you may need a second crew member present to turn it on while you're there with your DVM). Good luck. Richard Kollman's boat fridge website has some good troubleshooting tips.

Thanks Stu. I think it's time to start checking voltage drops across all sorts of things.... I also read on Richard Kollman's site that the fuse on the circuit board is sometime a culprit. I didn't even know there was one (two) on there. Just wish the unit wasn't so inaccessible!

So I pulled both fuses out of the unit and their contact surfaces seemed a bit too oxidized. I wire brushed them and stuck them back in.... and what do you know. The unit fired right up. Hopefully its not just a result of the batteries being fully charged. But it did seem to get really cold and stay cold throughout the day with only on batter power. Thanks again Stu!

I don't know how Catalina thought owners would be able to get the frig unit out of that starboard location. I had to put a new fan on mine and my 6'5 arms could barely reach the screws to get it out.
