Yes. You are correct that the wire size (and very importantly, quality connections) makes the difference. I am constantly amazed at how many people think they need to have starting batteries installed right next to their starters, when using the proper wire gauge will allow them to place any batteries anywhere on the boat. Using the correct wire gauge, based on the 3% voltage drop tables, is the right way to do it. In your case, I'm not sure if 00 is either perfect or overkill, just check the distance (complete circuit including ground wire length) against the tables.
