Ballast Pump Out

Dear Pat. On my 26' I have used garden hose inside the vent hole under the step with a 12volt pump. It takes about 45min. to pump it out. When I bought the boat used they told me that's how to do it or I would flood the floor. Well I found if I open the drain only and pull boat to level spot it drain's just fine. By the time you park plenty of water has drained out.

Thanks Harry

I own a Ford Crown Vic, with towing of 5000lbs. I am looking a buying a trailerable boat and didn't want to buy another vehicle in the process. I live in Pensacola, lots of sandy beaches, so I didn't want a keel either. So my best choices to my knowledge, are the Hunter 26 and the MacGregor. Obvious big difference. This will be my first boat. Thank You again.

It'll do fine

I tow my 23.5 with a Gran Marquis and have had no problems with getting in or out without using the extension on the trailer. I would think that unless the ramp is real steep your Crown Vic should do fine. The suggestions on a towing vehicle from this site all seem to favor big trucks I really like my big Mercury and would bet that my ride and fuel milage is better than those trucks with and without the boat behind it.

Thanks Rick

Thanks Rick, but I suspect a 26 or a 260 are considerably heavier coming out of the water until the ballast is drained. I was hoping someone had come up with an idea for draining the Water Ballast before pulling out. Is the 23.5 heavier? I check out the specs on this site to find out. Yeah if your car will do it mine should. Thanks Again.

They are heavier...

by 2,000 pounds but if you can get it moving up the ramp it will continue to pull without any problems. The secret is to keep moving once it gets going and to keep the wheels form spinning. A truck I suspect, unless it has alot of weight in the bed or is a four wheel drive would be at a disadvantage as far pulling the boat up the ramp vs a big car.

4 Other Boats

Harry I am looking at the Hunter 26, as compared to the Mac 26 sailboat, not the power/sail combo. I noticed in some past messages you mentioned to someone you had owned 4 other boats, before your Hunter, could one of those had been a Mac 26. If so could you tell me your personal experiences and comparisons, Pros and Cons. Thanks, Pat.

Ballast pumpout

A bilge pump would probably do the job.....eventually. You're looking at 250 gallons! I would suggest getting a higher capacity AC pump and pumping out via the vent hole while still dockside. Tom

Ballast Pump Out

Somewhere I read about pumping air into the ballast tank to force the water out through the valve where it originally entered. Seems to me there was a valve stem, like on your tires, installed in the vent whole then a small air compressor (12 volt) hooked up to it and the air displaced the water prior to retrieving the boat on the trailer.

Cordless Drill?

How about one of those pumps that goes on the end of the drill and a cordless drill? That might be my excuse to go buy one of those new 24 volt ones. I've had a 12 volt one forabout 8 years and cannot imagine owning a boat and not having one .
