After much measuring and head scratcing I finally bought an electric windlass today for my 34.In the end I decided on a vertical windlass.I am going to cut the anchor locker lid in half and fix the front half down securley leaving the back half free to open. The windlass will then be mounted through the front fixed half laeving just the drum above deck. The only thing I'm not exactly sure of yet is whether I will need to cut through the bottom of the locker to gain a little more space for the chain. Has anyone else mounted a windlass in this way? Any other advice before I start cutting welcome. I will let you know how it goes and hopefully post some pics. Andrew

Similar Approach

Hi Andrew, I'm very interested in doing the same thing on my 1983 Hunter 34. I heard someone suggest cutting the anchor locker cover in half and mounting the windlass on the back half so the rode would have a more direct drop into the deeper aft half of the well. I have also thought about taking the original anchor locker cover off and using it as a template for making a new two-part cover. This would preserve the original cover in the event a future owner might rather have things put back to "factory". I also thought about running a chain pipe through the bottom of the anchor locker and down into the space below the V-berth bunk to provide additional fall for the road as well as more storage. Which model windlass did you settle on? Please contact me with an e-mail directly at ncgarya@aol.com I'd love to keep up with your progress and share ideas on this project. Thanks, Gary

The chain/rode witll need to drop straight down

I looked at this for my 37, and decided I would have to rebuild the the entire locker... which there is room to do in the 37 in fron of the V-berth. But that sounded too much like real work.... There are some pictures of a boat (Rainbow Dancer?) - a 37 - that did exactly this. Check the archives.

windlass installation

I installed a windlass in my 91 37.5 behind the anchor locker . I do have to flake the rode into the locker as it comes aboard the boat.It is not a big deal to do this. I have previosly submitted pictures of the installation in photo forum. all in all it certainly beats straining my back.

Keep us posted !

Andrew, I hope your project goes well and I hope you will let us see some pix of the finished project. I am considering the same thing on my 34 only I am not smart enough to do it without someone blazing the trail first. Keep us posted . Travis

I installed a windlass in a similar manner only I mounted the windlass on the aft part of the locker cover. The windlass portion of the cover (about 1/3 of the cover) is fixed. Before installation I epoxied the cut as the cover was cored. I still have to flake the rode but no big deal.

Which Model?

David, So many of us Hunter 34 owners want to do the same thing. Can you provide details? Which windlass? Do you have any photos of your installation? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you, Gary

same question...but for a manual windlass

I have had an old manual windlass that worked fine. It has stopped working now and I need to obtain another. Does anyone know which brands (manuals) are available ? Thanks
