Electric Winch

I'm thinking of adding an electric winch (Lewmar 44) to our 376. A member of our club did this himself and the cable run (around the companionway, to the port locker and forward to the control panel) sounded excruciating. Has anyone else done job? If so, did you use the same cable run, find an alternative path, give up and hire someone, etc.?

Gotta have one!

Phil, I can't answer your question because my 380 came with one, but I can tell you the power winch on the 380 is an absolute necessity. It was expensive but I would never raise this mainsail without one. And whatever it will cost you, I promise your level of sailing enjoyment will make the outflow of money hurt less. Bob Knott H380

Thanks to this site, we required that one be added before we bought our 2 year old 376 from a dealer. The wires were brought down into the aft cabin along the starboard door and then under the floor. The wires were then covered by a a nice piece of teak that had been gouged out in the back and scribbed to fit perfectly. Hope that helps, I know the electric winch will. Russell Egge Allie Kat

Power Winch

Phil, Unless you are set on a Lewmar, you might want to check out an Arco winch from the Australian Yacht Winch Co. I installed on on my legend 37 for less than $2000. Check them out at www.arco-winches.com Good Luck, Bob

retro-fit

Phil, the newer Lewmar winches can be retro-fit to include motors. If memory serves correct, the 44 is the smallest model on which this feature is available. It might be worth checking with your local Lewmar rep.

Vertical or Horizontal ?

Is the motor orientation vertical or horizontal when installed on the 376? I checked the arco-winches.com site and looks like a good product. The power winch should definitely be standard on the 376. I'm looking to buy one myself. Doug s/v Tenacious h376

Done some more research

Appreciate all the comments and suggestions. I've done some research since the original post. Arco of Australia - Winch $660; horizontal motor $1576. Lewmar - quote from Boat US - 44 CEST - $3660. Looks like Arco is a good deal by comparison. In either case, order the cabin headliner cover for the horizontal directly from Hunter parts.
