Hello all,
We are sad. Out 356 is currently lonely and shivering- sitting on the hard in Michigan under a deep frozen blanket of snow. So it's the perfect time to start collecting the new vessle toys for 2014 Great Lakes Summer Sailing. If there are any sailors who could provide sage advice on make, model, price range and advantage for an electric winch-that would be GR8! Our girl-Sami Dog, has a non-furled main.
thanks,
Jim n Kathy [at home in Folsom, CA awaiting the MI May thaw....]

Jim,

Are you looking for an electric winch for your jib sheets or for raining the mainsail (usually a cabintop winch smaller than the jib sheet winches)?

Many winch manufacturers offer conversion packages to change manual even two speed winches to electric models.

What manufacturer winches do you have on your boat now?

Our First 36.7 has an electric Lewmar ST40 winch for the mainsheet. The electric part was a dealer installed mod. The kit was a $1600 add + install and is available everywhere. As we often double-hand when cruising, it is a great help in raising the main. The motor cover underneath (custom made) is about the size of a small shoebox, mounted to the roof of the aft starboard cabin. You forget its there.

A great addition. If you do not have a track system for your main, be VERY careful when using the winch to raise the sail. If any slugs bind it will pop them off before you know what happened.
