Ship ahoy as my new old Mac 25 did not come with a motor.
I've been looking into a minnkota saltwater transom motor I will call minnkota cause in their ad does this motor fit my boat? They are going by boat length and of course shaft length which I've got to measure transom to water line........ But anyway in converting the 9.9 HP to thrust lbs
I get 55lb thrust equals 9.8hp needed to propel boat minnkota says 55lb thrust is not for a boat longer than 21ft. ... I'm wanting to do electric motor as it is lighter and quieter and I may b3 able to do solar battery so has anyone converted to electric.......
I'm ready to sail so I give updates soon to what I find lol:naughty::snooty::snooty::snooty::snooty:

Very limited power no matter what your calculations say. Heavy amp use. I would NOT recommend! Chief

Could be a viable solution IF you are very sure you won't need to buck heavy wind/waves, and are only using it to slowly move out of a marina and back in with minimal motoring.. and you have shore power to charge the batteries (at both ends of a trip). You would probably want 2, 6V golf cart batteries in series as a minimum..
Many folks, myself included, would not use a trolling motor because the area we sail in would not allow use of a low power, long time to "refuel" motor. A four stroke long shaft outboard of at least 7.5 hp would be what I would use here on Lake Pontchartrain and the gulf coast. I used a 7.5 hp Honda on a similar boat for years cruising around the Lake and out onto the Gulf coastal islands.. Sometimes motoring for 4-6 hours because of lack of wind..

Welcome aboard Lisdom !

Electric motor

I looked into electric motor a year ago and i have a Gen and 2-195 watt solar on my boat and even with my solar I would have to run my Gen many hours to recharge.
If you have shore power and only day sail maybe electric would work.

You cannot directly convert thrust to HP.

But if you are looking for an simple indirect comparison, I'll tell you that a 55lb thrust electric motor is less powerful than a 2hp gas outboard.

I used to have a 55lb troller on the back of a First 235 while on a lake that outlawed gas motors. It was only good for getting back the the mooring when the wind totally died. I would never want to rely on it to push me against wind, waves or tide. Or for any distance more than a 1/2 mile.
