oday daysailor 17' Varies
I am considering putting an electric motor on my daysailor to replace an existing gas powered. Does anyone have any experience? I wonder about the wires and the placement of the battery in the hull.

Thanks

Had a 16' Peregrine a few years ago. First ran my minkota off one of those battery boosters. Not bad if you didn't have too far to go. Then I got smart and picked up a lawn tractor battery - worked much better. Put it in the cuddy and ran permanent wiring under the seats to the stern. Installed a plug there and had the mate to it on a short line to the minkota. Could just unplug it and pop it in the cuddy or take it home. Had a solar panel that also plugged in like the minkota to keep the battery as charged as possible. My motor was only 30 lbs thrust and in windy condions was a little under powered.

Hope this helps.

I have used trolling motors for several sailboats but only on lakes. Be sure to get a deep cycle battery and a good charger. A 30 lbs thrust should be ok. Make sure to secure your battery in a mounted box in case you capsize.

Oday Javelin Nj
Not sure if it is still needed - but for comparison sakes, I use a 46# minkota for my 14' Javelin that weighs about 600 lbs plus gear and two people figure 1000 lbs. It works great and provides power against the currents I face on tidal rivers in NJ. If you are on a smallish type lake your can go smaller like the 30 lb however is the diff in cost is small you might appreciate it. As for the battery, don't cheap out - get a real marine battery and charger. If you run out of juice while under way you will wish you spent the extra $50-100 real fast :)
