Electric lift pumps

Hello everyone,

We have a Volvo MD6A diesel, and it came with a secondary electric
lift pump, which we have since discovered, doesn't work. We don't
know if the original integral lift pump is faulty, although it works
when I pump it manually, or whether it simply wasn't up to the job
once the fuel levels got low. Given the cost of a new UL approved
electric pump, I was wondering if anyone out there had experienced a
similar situation. Does the MD6A always require a secondary pump?
Any wisdom from the group would be appreciated.

Regards,

The pump is the same used in 1970's cars like the mini. The pump is used as
sometimes the manual pump on the engine has not got the lift to get the fuel
from the tank when it is low. I have changed my pump to an american one
made by
Facet which works well. The only thing that wears onthe old pump are the
contacts which are easy to replace.

Hope thsi helps

Any small electric automotive fuel pump suitable for diesel fuel can be
used. Parts stores have them for about $40.00. I have installed them on
small diesels where they weren't original equipment, to make bleeding the
engine easier. My old, arthritic, fingers get tired of operating the
mechanical lift pump manually.

Hi Christine

The electric lift pump on "Naim" was'nt working when I bought her and the
MD6A worked well enough. However since stripping the pump and coaxing it back
into life the engine is certainly much easier to start and to bleed. If you
replace the pump make sure you get a "suck" type rather than a "blow" type,
there is a difference.
