Electric hook-up problem

I just bought a 1985 Catalina 25, and when I plugged in the shore power for the first time, the back of the electric panel started smoking. The boat had not been used much in the last few years before I bought it. Does that sound like just a simple short? Are there any no-no's I could have done to cause this? Does it matter which setting the battery selector is on when charging?

I feel like an idiot!! Are there any "Catalinas for Dummies" books out there?
