Hey sailors, Wanted to ask about the best way to set up an electric fuel pump to bypass my old manual one. My current system is tank feed to dual racor 30, 10, to fuel pump and then 2 micron at stock filter on 3gm30f. Questions Where to put the pump in the loop? Do I place power at the wiring harness so ignition key powers pump? What is the proper pressure for an electric pump and where to get it? Can I still use the banjo fitting off the manual pump to secondary filter or do you rig it another way? Other gotchas.... Cheers Rick

manual fuel pump?

that sounds like a lot work! the "best" setup IMO is an in-tank pump with a pressure regulator to bring it to the same pressure as your mechanical pump (I don't know that pressure) , but I can assure you that the proper pressure is the same pressure your engine runs at now. Now, on some older ford trucks, they run an electric pump through a mechanical pump on the engine. either pump is capable of powering the engine alone, and on a "good" day the mechanical pump is not really pumping, but just moving along with the flow. I like this setup, but I don't know if you can do it on your engine

Ha Ha Brian

It was late and I just couldnt come up with "mechanical". OK the cam driven, stock, flea ridden, diesel leakin, manual one :) Cheers

I have an electric pump on a 3GM

I have an electric fuel pump on a 3GM Yanmar. Don't use it as a lift pump, but for bleeding when necessary. Mount the pump as close as possible to the tank. Mine is wired up to the ignition switch, with a toggle switch at the pump, to turn on when needed. If your going to use it to replace the lift pump, you can just wire it direct to the ignition switch. It should be pretty easy to take the manual pump out of the circuit. Just run the fuel line from the Racor direct to the engine mounted filter. Not sure I would do that though. Seems like you could be asking for some other problems. The old pump, could possibly suck engine oil and pump it out if it is leaking in the wrong place. And if your going to go to the trouble of a blocking plate for the mount, would be just as easy to replace the pump. I do love the electric for bleeding though.

What I did on my Westerbeke 30

To help with bleeding, fuel polishing and as a backup to the manual lift pump I installed a Walbro electric pump with a switch,at first I was going to remove the old lift pump and blank up the opening on the engine but further research tells me that a lift pump will last forever Here's a link to pump I installed

Electric Fuel Pumps

Rick, The appropriate electric fuel pump is one designed for use with carb. engines. If you bypass the mechanical pump and don't want to plate it over you could just remove the lever. That will disable the pump and provide you with a cover plate. If you have a vacuum guage for the primary filter the pump should be after the guage.

Put the 12vdc pump ....

'IN-LINE" (IN-SERIES) with the mechanical pump. The 12vdc pump will 'just sit there' until you energize it .... due to the arrangement of the poppet valves. DONT put the 12vdc pump in a 'parallel' with the mechanical pump. Pressure ~4-5 psig at 1-2 GPM .... so you dont break (breakthrough) the diaphragm of the mechanical pump. BTW - try to get a pump with ***EPDM*** rubber components rather than Neoprene or BUNA diaphragm, etc. Neoprene and BUNA are not very chemically compatible with the newer 'bio-fuels', especially those that have more than 5% of 'reclaimed oil' from re-refined 'cooking, etc. oil'. EPR (EthylenePropyleneRubber) or EPDM (EthylenePropyleneDiamineMonomer). EPDM is the 'best' choice. The vacuum gage goes BETWEEN the pump(s) and the Racor filters.

dc fuel pump

Thanks boys. Will plan on keeping the diaphram pump in the loop, but adding an electrical also. Handy for bleeding. Thanks for the spec RichH. Cheers Rick

Hey Rick, When's that rematch?

Rick I put in a Walbro Fr series in for a transfer, polishing, and bleeding pump(see photo). It works great and is designed for this type of service. It can pull fuel through the racors with no problem and if in line with the mechanical pump it will pass fuel when it's off. I don't use this one as a lift pump, because my new engine has a mechanical and an electric lift pump. Many of the mechanical lift pumps have a limited lift capacity, so my electric is designed to be taken out of service by pulling it's fuse if the mechanical is up to the task, and then fuel justs passes though it like it's not there. Be aware that if your using an electric as a lift pump, you must run it's power source through an oil pressure switch (or similar device)to shut it off in the event of a hose failure combined with the engine off/stalled/fire. Otherwise you could be pumping fuel into the ER and fire. The current "Dancy" is at Knight & Carver right now getting the engine craned in, a new shaft and cutless bearings, bottom paint and topside paint. Would you like the bill? When it comes out and I get the engine finished we need to do a rematch of the "Race". How's the house? When's the party? Dwain S/V Dancy
