This weekend we held our annual winter crew party, an event that Jodi and I throw to thank everyone that sailed/raced with us this past year, and to talk about the program for 2017. About 20 people showed up, and we had a great time.

But the standout of the entire evening was a gift that one of the crewmember gave me, a bottle of El Dorado 21 year old reserve rum. I had no idea this stuff existed, The smooothness and complexity was magical.

I'm ruined as a rum drinker from now on. Anyone else know if this stuff? Wow!

Looks like something to explore. Perhaps you should follow the old captains tradition and send it to me so that I might taste it for you. To be sure it is not laced with poison. If I survive I will promptl return the bottle as is the proper action. If the bottle is poisoned then you will know that I did my duty and spared the captain. :liar:

The Rum truth
EL DORADO 21 YEAR OLD RUM

This glorious full bodied rum from El Dorado was launched in late 2002 and has been aged for 21 years. It is full bodied with exquisite taste and character, blended from hand selected aged rums being at least 21 years old with some being aged up to 25 years. These rums are all chosen by the master distiller with each rum being from either the Enmore wooden Coffey still, the Versailles single wooden pot still and the Albion Savalle still. The rums are matured in 45 gallon oak casks in an ideal natural climate for ageing rums, within six degrees of the equator on the tropical north coast of South America.

When the 21 year old was first created it was reviewed at the Beverage Tasting Institute of Chicago and they summed it up with this statement. A monumental aged rum that is one of the world's greatest rum drinking experiences

On the nose there is a degree of complexity with lush tropical fruit and spice with hints of honey and dark sugar. The first sip provides a warming sensation yet silky with a full bodied rich mouth feel. On the palate it is round and mellow with rich flavours of fruit and spice.
This looks like a clear case of crew attempting to seduce the captain. Caution is called for in such moments. Your still a young man.

And it is a well known fact that rum is the reason pirates never ruled the world!

That's a $100 bottle here in FL. Enjoy. Always fun to have that "this is something I'm going to wish I never knew existed" moment. A note of caution: if you begin to seek out that same experience in the world of Scotch, the damage to your wallet could be substantial.

True story. Pirates drank rum because Kentucky hadn't been invented yet. So there was no bourbon. If pirates had had bourbon, there would be a Jolly Roger flying over the White House right now. :dancing:

Going to have to find some.. .. for a test..
Always have some rum and some sour mash whisky (no "e" 'cause that is the way it is supposed to be) on board..

Tests should be performed under carefully controlled conditions. As a QA expert with systems design experience, I am completely available to help guide you through the process, ensure proper procedure, and document the results in a format ready for publishing (in the Journal of Irreproducible Results). Let me know when you need me to arrive. I don't need to be paid, though I do accept a wide range of currencies (scotch, bourbon, rum, sailboat rides, splicing lessons, etc.).

Well, a guy who takes me sailing a lot has his birthday today. So I'll try to scare up a bottle. Down the road I may get a taste. I shiver to think he might put tonic, or worse, coke in it. I couldn't bear that.

Jackdaw, El Dorado is my favorite rum. I also keep at least one bottle on the boat. Currently have a 21 and 15 yr at home and a 15 yr and 12 yr on the boat. Its a Guyanese rum made the old fashion way and I agree with you it has a smooth taste. You are all welcome aboard for a taste.:)

If you wait long enough they'll all be 21 years old.

You might just want to try this one for smoothness. A bit more rare and harder to find.
