Are the sheaves and hangers in OK condition? I think a decent welding shop could duplicate the base plate. I vaguely recall that it is steel, been a long time since I was under there. Steel should be OK because it is not supposed to get wet.

Hi:

Congrats on becoming a Cherubini Hunter owner. The participants on this site believe (with confiction) that we have wonderful boats for the year/vintage which are under-appreciated by most of the sailing community.

Are you close enough to your boat to take few pictures to post?

I've got a 1980 Cherubini Hunter 36 footer.

Many (if not most) of the early Hunters were fitted with Yacht Specialties Pedestal and steering systems. At least mine is.

Attached is a pdf of the installation instructions for the original Yacht Specialities system. I believe this company was purchased/morphed into Edson. Maybe the illustrations will help.

On my boat, the sheaves that route the SS steering cable under the pedestal from vertical to horizontal to the quadrant mounted on the rudder post are in wonderful shape.

Again, a picture or two might help forum members better visualize a solution for you.

So there isn't enough left of the original for a pattern? You could use a piece of 1/4" which would be overkill. Then size it larger than the base of the pedestal. Drill bolt holes that match the pedestal holes. Also cut/drill a couple of one inch holes for future wiring of instrumentation. Positioning the sheaves is the challenge. You will need to see how the cables line up at the bottom of the pedestal. Then studs can be welded to the plate for the sheave hangers. As I write this I am thinking that getting a loan for the Edson replacement might be the easier route. There is also the "boneyard" option where you might find a replacement.

I have photos of the parts or what is left of them. There is a wheel on the top of the rudder. The Adjustable Idler Plate looks Similar? I Think that fabricating a new one would be easy if I could find a patern.

Ed the Sheaves and hangers look fine. If that is what is left attached to the cable by 2 pulleys and hanging from the center of the column? I will grab my SD card out of camera tomorrow. Thank U !!

The first place to look is with Edson. They were the OEM mfg for those units. If they do not have replacements, I would look at McMaster & Carr.

They have many parts that are off the shelf, which is what many of the parts that were used to put these units together.

If that does not work out, the salvage yards would be a good place to go. THere were a lot of these boats made and I would assume that most of the Cherbuini's had interchangable parts from one model to the next.
