Edson steering cable replacement

I am looking to replace the cable on the system and find that when C&C installed the assembly the quadrant evidently is installed upside down from the norm... It was explained to me by Edson that the 'wheel' will operate either way on the rudder stock....and,perhaps, in order to get a more fair lead from the 'crossed wire idler' sheaves, they installed the thing upside down. The problem with doing that is it leave about an 1 1/2" between the cockpit sole and the quadrant to get the old cable off and the new one on!!...not much room to get your finger in...let alone twist a wrench. Has anyone had this happen?? Whats your fix? I was surprised that Edson had no suggestions for me. The set up that I currently have for cable is NOT a stock item, evidently set up by the previous owner. He has swaged a bolt onto the bitter end of cable such that it is inserted where the eye-bolt would normally be and double-nutted it... forgoing the normal thimble/cable wrap and cable clamp set-up... This reduces the ability to adjust any slack in a stretched cable to about 2-3" on both cable ends....but how much do you need? The Edson rep said that C&C was real good for creating cramped situations...but this one caps it for me.. Better suggestions would be appreciated.

Edson steering part deux

Hi, I have run onto this very same problem with several C&C's. The most notable was a 1981 36'. Though a bit more expensive, the best solution, from a rigger's point of vien was to refit with a drag link system. No cables, no idler pulleys. A tight fit, but works on both the 27 and the 36 as I have fitted both.

Drag link (steering) system... (-->, Tom?)

Tom,I visited the link and found only a riggers website...Is that your world? I am not familiar with the drag link steering...could you elaborate a little? Thanks
