Am posting specific to an actual Edson steering failure:
I have read warnings here and elsewhere about corrosion on Edson bits. Including the pedestal base backing. I've eyeballed mine from below, and thought it to look good. Also brag to myself about the steering setup - solid skeg-hung rudder, bronze post and hardware, Edson 4-post pedestal, etc.
Then, I saw this video. And hey skipper, he has the same pedestal as you. On a newer boat.
Time to check it again.
Anyway, I like actual occurrences to analyze, instead of just worry-warting. Also this is an ok video, with a likable host and a bit of hands on.
But it's long. Skip to about 16:30 (part 2) for the Edson failure.
