Jim, As it happens there is a gin pole explained in the Fleet 20 newsletter. I attached a link. Although they are using a 2x4 I made the one I use from a 6'X 1 3/4" piece of aluminum tubing I bought from Texas Towers. One one end has a strap welded that wraps around the mast, a 1'4" bolt holds it in place. The other has an eye bolt, the jib halyard attach to this, I attach the Boom Vang from the eye then to the stem fitting. (one could use the main sheet as well) Raising it alone is the only way I have ever stepped the mast. I tried baby stays but found them useless, I stand beside the mast as its raises or lowered it to stabilize it.
